How do I turn the Lock on?
You set the Lock up from Settings by choosing a 4-digit PIN — it takes about a minute.
- Click the shield icon in the Chrome toolbar, then open Settings.
- Find the "Caregiver Lock" section.
- Click "Set up ▸".
- Enter a 4-digit PIN in the four boxes shown.
- Click "Save PIN."
That's it — protection settings are now locked and require your PIN to weaken.
Before you do this, two things to know
- Three wrong PIN attempts in a row locks PIN entry for 30 minutes. This is deliberate — it stops someone guessing a 4-digit PIN by trying every combination. If this happens, wait out the 30 minutes and try again.
- If the PIN is forgotten, the only fix is to uninstall and reinstall the extension. There is no reset. Write your PIN down somewhere safe before you save it. Reinstalling also clears the trusted sites list, so any sites already marked as trusted will be checked again from scratch. See "What is the Lock, and should I use it?" for the full reasoning.
Changing the PIN
- Open Settings and find the "Caregiver Lock" section.
- Click "Change PIN."
- Enter your current PIN to confirm it's you.
- Set your new 4-digit PIN.
Removing the Lock
- Open Settings and find the "Caregiver Lock" section.
- Click "Remove lock."
- Enter your current PIN to confirm it's you.
Both changing the PIN and removing the Lock always require the current PIN first — there's no way to do either without it.
Did this fix it?
